Toyota Recalls 4.26 Million Vehicles for ‘Very Dangerous’ Gas Pedal Defects

Tuesday, January 19th, 2010

Toyota Motor Corp. recently announced a huge recall that affects 4.26 million cars and trucks manufactured since the 2002 model year. The recall is to modify and replace gas pedals that may stick and cause a vehicle to accelerate out of control. Toyota issued a statement that said the recall involves floor mats that can jam the accelerator pedal open and have done so at least 1000 times on Toyota vehicles.

The gas pedal problems have been widely reported with one especially well publicized incident in San Diego that claimed the lives of a California Highway Patrol officer and three members of his family. Since the 2002 model year, Toyota and Lexus cars and trucks have been involved in more than one thousand sudden-acceleration incidents that claimed 19 lives, resulting in the biggest recall in company history.

“We are very, very confident that we have addressed this issue,” Toyota spokesperson Irv Miller told reporters in detailing the recall plans Wednesday.

Three People Injured in Trabuco Canyon Auto Accident

Thursday, January 14th, 2010

The Orange County Register reported a Trabuco Canyon Auto accident that involved a truck and a minivan in Live Oak Canyon Road on September 6 around 4 p.m., very close to where two teens lost their lives in another car accident just two weeks previously. Accident witnesses told California Highway Patrol officials that a southbound Long Beach Yellow Cab Co-op minivan clipped the front of a northbound box truck, causing extensive damage to the minivan’s front end and driver’s side. The minivan caught fire for a brief time before an Orange County Parks Ranger, who happened by on the way home from work, extinguished it.

After the initial collision, investigators say the minivan struck the box truck again on the left side, causing it to veer into a ditch. The 50-year-old male driver of the minivan was transported in critical condition to Mission Hospital in Mission Viejo. Emergency flight personnel airlifted the 18-year-old female passenger in the minivan taxi to Mission Hospital in critical to grave condition.

Man Suffers Possible Broken Leg Fighting Two Robbers in Santa Ana

Thursday, January 7th, 2010

The Orange County Register describes an incident where a man apparently suffered a broken leg while defending himself against two robbers who took his wallet. Police investigating the assault say the man was assaulted after he walked out of a store at 100 S. New Hope around 10:20 p.m. and two robbery suspects confronted him, demanding money.

Witnesses said that one assailant asked the victim for his money. When the victim told him he only had a few dollars, one of the suspects forcibly took the man’s billfold. When the victim attempted to push the assailant away, the assailant struck him with a metal object. A Santa Ana police officer said that after the blow, the victim took the metal object away from the attacker. The suspects fled from the scene on bicycles. The victim received treatment at a nearby hospital. At the time of this report, the hospital had not confirmed that the leg was actually broken. (more…)
