Elder Abuse Forensic Center Aids California Seniors

Tuesday, February 22nd, 2011

Southern California seniors face some scary issues. According to California’s Adult Protective Services department, elder abuse cases range in the hundreds each month across the state. However, the elderly have advocates in a group called the Elder Abuse Forensic Center.

The Elder Abuse Forensic Center was founded in 2003 and continues to work for the rights of the elderly. It investigates all kinds of abuse of seniors, including financial abuse committed by businesses that pursue predatory actions against seniors, physical abuse by caregivers or others and types of abuse often brought on parents by their children as they age and become less able to protect themselves.

From protecting seniors against the loss of their critical Social Security income to making sure they are not experiencing physical abuse at home or in nursing homes, the Elder Abuse Forensic Center advocates strongly for these Californians who need help. Recent reports show that the center continues to work with other advocacy groups to ensure that there is proper documentation of incidents of elder abuse that occur in all corners of the state.

California Department of Justice Reveals Facts on Elder Abuse

Tuesday, January 25th, 2011

Many individuals and families know to look for signs of elder abuse in order to protect their most senior members, but according to California agencies, there’s still a disturbingly high rate of elder abuse in the state. A new guideline from the California Department of Justice (CDJ), in coordination with the AARP, shows over 200,000 cases of elder abuse annually in California.

According to the CDJ, there are some primary types of elder abuse that too often go unnoticed.  One is abuse in long-term care facilities. Another one is physical abuse by family members or others. The third kind of common elder abuse is financial abuse. This type of crime is often considered more complex and less easy to identify.

What can people do about financial elder abuse? The CDJ has put forward some key tips for protecting the finances of elders who are likely to fall prey to all kinds of predatory practices. One tip is to use the available Do Not Call List to limit the access of unscrupulous telemarketers into a senior’s home. This is something that caregivers or younger family members can do for an elderly person. Seniors are also encouraged to be careful in parting with personal information and to maintain correct power of attorney to stop opportunistic individuals from robbing them through legal technicalities.

Unfortunately, elder abuse is still common in California. If you suspect someone in your family is a victim, call our California elder abuse lawyer, Samer Habbas. Mr. Habbas has helped many clients deal with the troubling aspects of different types of elder abuse. Neglect and Abuse of the Elderly in Southern California

Friday, August 6th, 2010

Often times, elderly victims in cases of abuse or neglect do not know to whom they should turn or what, if any, legal action they can take. Recently, Southern California has seen a rise in the number of court cases that deal with nursing home and elderly abuse. Abuse and negligence involving the elderly can come in many different forms. Incidents at nursing and funeral homes have defrauded these victims out of a great deal of money, and the elderly have been targets of the theft of valuable items and money. Many have suffered serious injuries, and, in other cases, abuse and neglect have resulted in death.

It is important to protect the rights of seniors. The majority of those who care for the elderly do a tremendous job and are good, honest, hardworking and trustworthy people. However, it is imperative that anyone who suspects any abuse or neglect reports it to the proper authorities. If you personally suspect abuse of a senior, you can also contact elder abuse attorneys in Southern California who can assist you in notifying the proper authorities and help you recover damages on behalf of the injured elder. As a major supporter and believer in our elders and their rights, the Law Offices of Samer Habbas can be a great resource in obtaining information and receiving assistance regarding senior abuse cases.

If you or a close relative has suffered elder abuse in the Southern California, please call 1.888.848.5084 to contact the skilled and knowledgeable Samer Habbas elder abuse lawyers. We are available 24 hours a day to assist you and provide you with information for all of your legal needs.

A New Focus on Elder Abuse in the Health Bill

Friday, July 9th, 2010

Buried in the details of the recent health care legislation passed by Congress is nearly $800 million, which is slated to be spent over the next four years to prevent elder abuse and prosecute offenders. Our California elder abuse attorneys are happy that the funding has been passed, but are not pleased that it has taken more than 30 years for the money to be allocated. Orange County elder abuse lawyers and other advocates for the elderly have been asking for more money and resources to help seniors and prosecute offenders since 1978, and it appears that their efforts have finally been rewarded.

The new legislation is very similar to the Elder Justice Act proposed years ago by the National Center on Elder Abuse. State and local senior protective service programs will have a steady, dedicated revenue stream to fund proactive programs that can now investigate elder abuse such as the following:

* Physical and emotional abuse
* Nursing home neglect
* Financial exploitation and other kinds of theft

There are many pages of details in this part of the new legislation, but it all boils down to one thing: helping senior citizens by adding investigators who have a mandate to prevent abuse and prosecute abusers. Our Los Angeles elder abuse attorneys applaud the new law, but know that it is incumbent upon us all to protect the elderly from abuse of all kinds. If you suspect that someone you know is suffering physical, emotional or financial abuse, you’re the key to bringing that abuse to an end. Call 888.848.5084 today and schedule a consultation with one of our Los Angeles elder abuse lawyers. The abuse victim is counting on your help.
