High-Speed Trains the Safest Form of Transportation?

Wednesday, June 16th, 2010

High-speed trains have been getting a lot of media attention lately as our country searches for ways to get people from one place to another quickly, safely and in ways that reduce our dependency on fossil fuel. In the current economic climate, many high-speed train projects are being considered as a way to accomplish these goals and put people back to work. However, California train accident lawyers are concerned about whether a high-speed rail system is the right solution in a state plagued by train accidents.

These trains have marvelous safety records. Japan’s bullet trains, or Shinkansen, have transported over nine billion passengers in more than 46 years of operation without one train-related fatality. That’s remarkable. France’s TGV high-speed trains have been moving people quickly and efficiently for more than 29 years, carry over 100 million travelers annually and have not had a single train-related passenger fatality.

There are plans for one such high-speed train for California. The California High-Speed Rail Project will run on an 800-mile route, and Mr. Habbas and other Southern California train accident lawyers will be pleased to note that the system will be grade-separated. Grade-separated means that there will be no grade crossings with other rail lines, roads, pedestrians or other traffic. The only locations where the new trains would share tracks with other trains would be in the Bay Area and between Los Angeles and Anaheim.

Anaheim train accident lawyer Samer Habbas welcomes the new high-speed train in the area. Nevertheless, he sees victims of train accidents and their families every day and is concerned about the possibilities of even more accidents in the area. Taser Played Role in Man's Death, Lawsuit Filed by Sammer Habbas

Saturday, November 14th, 2009

The following are snippets from an article published on pe.com:

Marlon Acevedo, 35, was high on PCP when he clashed with Riverside police one year ago on Halloween, according to the coroner’s report. He was in the street screaming at passing cars, and officers struck him with batons and shocked him several times, the report said. He died at a hospital less than an hour later…

Samer Habbas, the attorney representing Acevedo’s relatives, said they have sued the Police Department, Chief Russ Leach, officers Daniel Koehler, Jeffrey Ratkovich and James Heiting, and others. The complaint alleges the officers violated Acevedo’s civil rights, wrongfully caused his death and used excessive force — with batons and the Taser — among other accusations.

“We’re talking about a mentally incapacitated person,” Habbas said. “They immediately took an aggressive approach.”

“Because he has PCP in his system, he no longer is going to be considered a human being?” Habbas said.

Attorney Habbas Hired in Excessive Force Case

Sunday, May 31st, 2009

Personal Injury Attorney Samer Habbas was recently hired in an excessive force case against the Riverside police.

Acevedo’s family has hired attorney Samer Habbas to begin investigating if excessive force was used.

Habbas said the preliminary report from the Riverside County coroner’s office showed Acevedo had been shocked twice and suffered multiple scratches and cuts on the head and face and multiple bruises and cuts to the arms and legs.

He called the incident tragic, saying that most of it happened in front of Acevedo’s girlfriend and mother and that he had a 2-year-old and 4-year-old.
