California Truck Accident Snarls Traffic

Friday, June 18th, 2010

A fiery truck accident closed all eastbound lanes of the 91 Freeway recently. The collision between a tractor-trailer and a late model Ford Mustang snarled traffic for hours as emergency response personnel investigated the truck accident and cleaned debris from the road. The California Highway Patrol received notification of the crash around 1:10 a.m. and arrived at the accident scene between Knott Avenue and Beach Boulevard in Buena Park.

When police arrived, both the Mustang and the truck were on fire with the truck on its side with its cab, but not its trailer, engulfed in flames. Accident investigators said that the driver of the Mustang fled the accident scene and has not yet been found. CHP officers reported that all eastbound lanes of the 95 Freeway were clear and opened by 6:30 a.m. It’s no secret that California leads the nation in fatal auto accidents every year. In 2003, 5,725 people suffered fatal injuries on California streets and highways, and of that number, 332 were fatal truck accidents.

Samer Habbas and other California truck accident lawyers see the victims of truck accidents and their families every day and understand very well that truck accidents are especially deadly. Even at low speeds, when a vehicle weighing up to 80,000 pounds strikes a vehicle weighing three or four thousand pounds, the occupants of the lighter vehicle are at increased risk for catastrophic, life changing injuries and often death. Southern California truck accident attorney Samer Habbas has been helping truck accident victims and their families for many years and works hard to help them recover the damages they deserve. 5 Killed, 6 Injured in Three-Vehicle Auto Accident on Interstate 5

Tuesday, May 25th, 2010

Slick roads may have been a contributing factor in a three-vehicle auto accident that claimed the lives of five people and sent six more to local hospitals for treatment of their injuries. The accident occurred recently on Interstate 5 near Newhall Pass just before midnight when a Mazda pickup truck spun out of control, struck the center divider and overturned. A Nissan Altima with six occupants was traveling behind the truck at an estimated 60 mph when the driver of the truck lost control.

The Altima’s driver attempted to avoid striking the truck and veered to the right, but was unable to avoid colliding with the overturned pickup. A Chevrolet Suburban behind the Nissan was traveling at 50 mph and was unable to avoid striking the Nissan. The four people riding in the Suburban were injured including the driver who was arrested on suspicion of operating a vehicle without a valid driver’s license. California Highway Patrol officers investigating the accident said that heavy rainfall that evening and slick roads could have prevented the drivers of the Nissan and Suburban from stopping in time to avoid the collisions.

How to Avoid a California Truck Accident

Monday, May 24th, 2010

California truck accident lawyer Samer Habbas would like to remind his fellow drivers that there are steps that they can take to avoid becoming another truck accident statistic. With so many 18-wheelers on our state’s streets and highways, he would like to offer the following driving safety tips:

  1. 1. Report aggressive truck drivers

If you see a truck driver who is reckless, aggressive, drifting from one lane to another or otherwise driving erratically, note the truck’s license plate number if you can and report it to the police. No cell phone? Get off at the next exit and call from a gas station. Doing so might save lives.

  1. 2. Maintain your vehicle properly

Staying on top of vehicle maintenance ensures that your brakes, steering, suspension and other important features will perform properly when trying to evade unexpected situations. Plus, it saves money over time by addressing small problems before they can become large and expensive ones.

  1. 3. Respect the truck’s blind spot

Big rigs have large blind spots on both sides, so don’t ever try to pass on the right, don’t travel in the blind spots for extended periods of time and if you drive a small car, respect the blind spot directly in front of a truck.

  1. 4. Don’t follow too closely

Don’t tailgate trucks because there is another blind spot directly behind them. They have an excellent field of view from their height, and if you’re right on their tail, you don’t. If they brake suddenly for any reason, the trailer will peel the top right off your car.

  1. 5. Be extra careful on interstate ramps

Entering California’s busy freeways requires lots of merging, and since these big rigs can’t stop on a dime, make sure you allow plenty of space when merging in front of one.

Long Beach truck accident lawyer Samer Habbas hopes that these reminders will help prevent you from becoming another accident statistic. However, if you’re involved in a truck accident, call Southern California truck accident attorney Samer Habbas at 888.848.5084 to schedule a free consultation.

Nine People Hospitalized in California Truck Accident

Tuesday, October 27th, 2009

A recent article in the Tracy Press claims that nine people were sent to various hospitals on September 28, 2009, in a California trucking accident that involved a semi truck rear-ending a passenger van. According to police officials investigating the accident, the rear-end collision occurred on Interstate 205 by 11th Street. A spokesperson for the California Highway Patrol said that the trucking accident occurred just after 6 a.m., sending nine people to area hospitals with non-life threatening injuries. The drivers of both vehicles were not injured.

Emergency response personnel say that the 2007 Ford E-350 van’s driver was a 60-year-old Stockton woman; she was heading west on I-205 at around 20 mph in heavy traffic. A tractor-trailer driven by a 52-year-old Modesto man traveling behind the van at around the same speed rear-ended the van. The truck driver said that he had looked to his right momentarily and failed to see the slowing van in front of him. CHP accident investigators said that alcohol was not a factor in the trucking accident.

Butane Tanker Crashes on San Diego Freeway

Thursday, June 4th, 2009

According to the DailyBreeze.com, on April 29, 2009, a tanker truck carrying over 8,000 gallons of flammable butane overturned on the San Diego Freeway. The accident occurred in the southbound lanes of the freeway shortly before midnight.

Officials say that none of the butane carried by the tanker spilled, and clean-up crews have safely cleared away the wreckage. So far, the cause of the crash has not been determined. One of the major issues confronting first responders in this type of accident is the possibility that butane has escaped from the tanker confinement. Since the gas is shipped under pressure, any breach in the steel liner of the tanker could be catastrophic.

In 2008, a butane tanker truck overturned on a Wyoming highway and exploded, sending debris flying up to a half-mile away.
