Sexual abuse Uber and other ride share applications, such as Lyft, have proven to be a flexible option for riders-especially when intoxicated. But the question is whether they have also become a liability – as a breeding ground for sexual assault and battery.

A CNN investigation revealed that more than 100 Uber drivers have been accused of sexually abusing riders during the last four years. One victim in particular told CNN that she feels anxiety and depression after getting an Uber because she was intoxicated and could not drive. Instead of arriving home safe, as the company prides itself, she was sexually assaulted. Her Uber driver is facing criminal trial for felony sexual battery.

She is one of many victims. The CNN investigation discovered there are dozens of cases similar to hers. Since Uber was not cooperating and failed to provide any data regarding how many of its drivers have been accused of sexual assaults, CNN did its own research. The investigation revealed that of the 103 Uber drivers accused of sexual assault, at least 31 have been convicted on charges ranging from battery to rape and dozens of criminal and civil cases are pending trial.

A similar investigation also revealed 18 cases accusing Lyft drivers of sexual assault.

Experts believe that the actual numbers of Uber drivers accused of sexual assault is much higher. The low numbers are a result of the crimes not being reported, prosecutors not having sufficient evidence to prosecute, or Uber settling cases quietly and confidentially before a civil case can even be filed.

Becoming an Uber driver is not a difficult process. Applicants complete the process online without the requirement of any background checks that involve fingerprints. Uber does its own background checks. Critics of the company’s lenient background check say the company needs to do more to ensure the safety of their riders.
