- In abuse/neglect Attorney
Nursing homes are supposed to care for their patients, not abuse them. While not all nursing homes are abusive, some are and the patients end up paying for it. This was a case for seriously ill patients in a nursing home in Modesto who were not given their medications. The nursing home was penalized by the health department for failing to administer these innocent patients with their medications.
According to the Modesto Bee, Vintage Faire Nursing and Rehabilitation Center failed to give its patients prescribed medication. These patients were suffering serious medical conditions, such as blood infections, epilepsy, heart arrhythmia and breathing problems. Even missing one dose of medication can cause serious health issues for such patients.
The California Department of Public Health investigated numerous complaints against the nursing home between February 18 and July 31, 2015. The results showed the home had violated several codes, including but not limited to verifying the licenses of new hires, failing to maintain the dignity of residents, lapses in care for patients given oxygen and poor infection control.
The Penalties and Violations
The nursing home was fined $12,740 for the safety violations described above, including one major violation involving a patient with sepsis who was not administered 33 doses of antibiotic therapy.
The Modesto Bee further reports that the violations committed by this nursing home facility are three times the national average. These violations were serious and even placed the patients in “immediate jeopardy” which could have possibly resulted in death or serious harm to the patients. Health inspectors concluded that three patients in particular could have suffered serious injuries or even died from the failure of getting their prescribed medication.
