Los Angeles, Calif. (September 20, 2020) — Just before kickoff Sunday, NFL Chargers team doctor punctured the lung of starting quarterback, Tyrod Taylor while attempting to administer a pain-killing injection into his cracked ribs. The reason for Taylor’s unexpected absence in Sunday’s game has been unclear until now. Coach Anthony Lynn reports that Taylor’s injury is not career-threatening, and says, “it happens…the doctor just made a mistake”. The NFL Players Association is currently launching an investigation over the medical malpractice incident.

However, this isn’t the first experience the Chargers have had dealing with medical malpractice. David Chao served as the Chargers head physician for 17 years, until the California Medical Board opened an investigation against him—following the 2012 suicide of former linebacker Junior Seau. It was later discovered that not only did Chao have a long history of alcohol and drug abuse (including two DUIs), he had over twenty malpractice lawsuits from former patients and other NFL players.

Medical Malpractice: A Doctor’s Liability for Mistakes

As stated by Coach Lynn, “the doctor just made a mistake”. Common sayings like “it was an accident” and “we all make mistakes”, do not change the negligent acts that took place. When the team doctor pierced Taylor’s lung with a needle, they put the quarterback’s health and career in jeopardy.

Healthcare providers are expected to uphold a standard level of care to which they vow to perform their duties to the best of their abilities, with ethical integrity and utmost respect for those in need. Patients trust their healthcare professionals with their lives, and sometimes that trust is taken advantage of. Medical malpractice is the third most common reason for death in America. Approximately 250,000 people die each year at the hands of medical malpractice.
