San Diego, Calif. — A recent E. coli outbreak has left one child dead and three other children infected, suspected to be contracted from the petting zoo at the San Diego County Fair. A 2-year-old boy, Jedidiah King Cabezuela, died on June 24 after being infected with the bacteria during his visit to the fair on June 15. Recently, a fifth child has been reported with symptoms of the infection.
All five children, between the ages of 2 and 13, contracted the bacterial infection after visiting the fair June 8 and June 22. Aside from the deceased, the other four children did not have to be hospitalized for their symptoms. In response, the petting zoo has been shut down by fair officials.
E. coli can be spread through contaminated food and water or by coming into contact with infected people and animals. If you fall ill from E. coli, you may experience the following symptoms: stomach cramps, diarrhea and vomiting. Healthy adults usually will recover from the infection within a week, but young children and older adults are at a greater risk for contracting a more life-threatening form of the infection. City officials have urged those who have experienced these symptoms on or after June 8, to immediately seek medical attention.
If the city is found at fault for the E. coli outbreak, they can be held liable for any resulting injury or death.
