A recent bus accident is still under investigation by the California Highway Patrol. The bus was traveling from Los Angeles to Sacramento when it struck an overturned SUV on Highway 99. Toxicology reports later determined that the driver of the SUV had been driving while under the influence of alcohol. The accident took the lives of six people, three women in the SUV and three bus passengers. Other bus passengers suffered injuries in the accident as well. The driver of the SUV was an 18-year-old female who was consuming alcohol illegally.
Many challenges face investigators in this case, and they must answer a few difficult questions. Unlike most bus accident cases where the driver and the bus company are the responsible parties, this case must also look at the SUV and its role in the accident. Other factors investigators need to take into consideration are the fact that a minor was driving the SUV while under the influence of alcohol. They must also determine at what point the SUV lost control and rolled over. Most bus accident lawyers in Los Angeles will tell you that this case may bring California’s dram shop laws into play as well because the teen had been drinking in a Southern California restaurant.
