Understanding the Signs of Nursing Home Abuse

nursing home sexual abuseGrowing is a part of life. However, with older age comes decisions that are difficult for most of us to make for our elderly loved ones. Taking care of our elderly loved ones can be hard. For some, we have no choice but to entrust the care of our elderly in to nursing homes. This can be a frightening decision because we have to worry about possible abuse and neglect.

Nevertheless, in some cases, there is no choice but to place your elderly loved one in a nursing home. If you find yourself making this difficult decision, you should be aware of what “red flags” to watch out for, and what to do if you see them.

“Obvious” Red Flags

Some signs of nursing home abuse or neglect are easy to see. Below are some obvious red flags that may indicate your elderly loved one may be a victim of nursing home abuse or neglect:

  • Poor personal hygiene. If your loved one displays poor personal hygiene when you visit them, it should be a sign that he or she may not be getting the care and attention they deserve. This could indicate a sign of abuse and neglect of their personal needs.
  • Dirty facilities. Nursing homes and other such facilities are bound by both state and federal law to keep their premises safe and clean.
  • Bruising & other physical signs. Bruising and other signs of bodily injuries are major red flags that your elderly loved one is a victim of nursing home abuse.

Less Apparent Signs

Unfortunately, not all signs of nursing home abuse and neglect are obvious. Some other signs are not as readily apparent. As such, you need to always be cautious of any signs that could possibly indicate abuse. Some less apparent signs of abuse and neglect in nursing homes are discussed below.

  • Weight loss. Some weight loss can be common amongst the elderly. However, when weight loss occurs suddenly or unexpectedly, it can be a sign that your elderly loved one is not receiving proper and adequate nutrition. This is considered abuse and neglect.
  • Reduced mobility. Some degree of reduced mobility is normal amongst elders. However, if the reduction in mobility is sudden or unexpected, it can be an indication that your loved one is not getting sufficient opportunity for physical activity and exercise at the nursing home facility.
  • Sudden mood change. Drastic mood change or lack of communication during your visits with your loved one could also indicate a possible sign of nursing home abuse or neglect.
