Semi-Truck Crashed Through Center Divider on 210 Freeway in Irwindale Before Fatal Crash That Left Dozens Injured

IRWINDALE, CALIFORNIA (June 23, 2026) – A woman has tragically died and 32 people were injured in an Irwindale semi-truck accident on the 210 freeway not far from Irwindale Avenue.

California Highway Patrol said that the accident took place around 8:55 AM on Saturday morning. A semi-truck was heading down the freeway when it crossed through the freeway’s center divider and entered opposing lanes of traffic.

Firefighters and paramedics were called to the scene of the accident to help all of the victims. The scene was absolutely chaotic, with multiple vehicles involved and dozens of people injured.

Sadly, one woman was pronounced dead shortly after first responders arrived. Another 32 people were taken to the hospital to receive treatment for injuries.

Two of those victims are believed to have been critically injured. A full investigation into the cause of the collision remains ongoing at this time.

Liability for Irwindale Semi-Truck Accidents

Truck drivers are required to obtain a commercial license and are expected to operate with an abundance of caution to avoid collisions. This necessitates that they operate their vehicle safely within a single lane of traffic. According to CA Veh Code § 21658, “A vehicle shall be driven as nearly as practical entirely within a single lane and shall not be moved from the lane until such movement can be made with reasonable safety.” There are multiple factors that could contribute to any driver departing from their lane of traffic.

  • Speeding: Drivers are substantially more likely to lose control of their vehicle if they are speeding.
  • Reckless Driving: If drivers are changing lanes too quickly, this is another factor that could cause a driver to lose control of their vehicle.
  • Fatigue: Truck drivers are put under an enormous amount of pressure to complete their delivery route as quickly as possible. This can lead to truck drivers becoming dangerously fatigued.
  • Vehicle System Failures: Semi-trucks have a very high utilization rate. If any components on a semi-truck malfunction, this could lead to a catastrophic failure.

If a truck driver allows their vehicle to drift into opposing lanes of traffic, this could be construed as negligence. There is a presumption of negligence on the part of any driver that allows their vehicle to enter into cross-traffic. Liability for any specific truck accident could extend beyond one driver determined to be at fault. Their employer could be liable for the collision if the truck driver was following a scheduled route. A freight carrier could also be responsible if they worked with a truck company that had a poor safety record or other safety violations.

Collecting Evidence After Any Truck Accidents

Accidents involving commercial trucks remain a major cause of preventable injury and death across the United States. According to the NHTSA, “In 2021 there were 5,788 people killed in traffic crashes involving large trucks. This was a 17-percent increase from 4,945 in 2020. Seventy-two percent of people killed in large-truck traffic crashes in 2021 were occupants of other vehicles.” It is very important that all evidence related to any truck crash is properly collected and preserved.

  • Police Report: A police report created after a collision should be sought. These reports can help reveal what happened in the lead-up to a crash.
  • Eyewitnesses: People that may have witnessed the crash can also play an important role. It is important that their stories are recorded early on while their memories are still fresh.
  • Work Records: All work records related to the truck driver should be preserved. These records may contain evidence of key violations on the part of a truck driver.
  • Event Data Recorder: Most trucks come equipped with an event data recorder. This device captures critical information about how a truck was being used prior to any crash.

Evidence is critical in demonstrating that a truck driver or their employer acted negligently. This is so important because truck companies and their insurance providers will almost never accept responsibility for any collision. Victims of truck accidents are protected by a number of laws. They are able to seek some measure of accountability through a civil action. This right also extends to the surviving family members of any person who died. They can pursue accountability through California Code of Civil Procedure § 377.60.
