IRWINDALE, CALIFORNIA (June 23, 2026) – A woman has tragically died and 32 people were injured in an Irwindale semi-truck accident on the 210 freeway not far from Irwindale Avenue.
California Highway Patrol said that the accident took place around 8:55 AM on Saturday morning. A semi-truck was heading down the freeway when it crossed through the freeway’s center divider and entered opposing lanes of traffic.
Firefighters and paramedics were called to the scene of the accident to help all of the victims. The scene was absolutely chaotic, with multiple vehicles involved and dozens of people injured.
Sadly, one woman was pronounced dead shortly after first responders arrived. Another 32 people were taken to the hospital to receive treatment for injuries.
Two of those victims are believed to have been critically injured. A full investigation into the cause of the collision remains ongoing at this time.
Truck drivers are required to obtain a commercial license and are expected to operate with an abundance of caution to avoid collisions. This necessitates that they operate their vehicle safely within a single lane of traffic. According to CA Veh Code § 21658, “A vehicle shall be driven as nearly as practical entirely within a single lane and shall not be moved from the lane until such movement can be made with reasonable safety.” There are multiple factors that could contribute to any driver departing from their lane of traffic.
If a truck driver allows their vehicle to drift into opposing lanes of traffic, this could be construed as negligence. There is a presumption of negligence on the part of any driver that allows their vehicle to enter into cross-traffic. Liability for any specific truck accident could extend beyond one driver determined to be at fault. Their employer could be liable for the collision if the truck driver was following a scheduled route. A freight carrier could also be responsible if they worked with a truck company that had a poor safety record or other safety violations.
Accidents involving commercial trucks remain a major cause of preventable injury and death across the United States. According to the NHTSA, “In 2021 there were 5,788 people killed in traffic crashes involving large trucks. This was a 17-percent increase from 4,945 in 2020. Seventy-two percent of people killed in large-truck traffic crashes in 2021 were occupants of other vehicles.” It is very important that all evidence related to any truck crash is properly collected and preserved.
Evidence is critical in demonstrating that a truck driver or their employer acted negligently. This is so important because truck companies and their insurance providers will almost never accept responsibility for any collision. Victims of truck accidents are protected by a number of laws. They are able to seek some measure of accountability through a civil action. This right also extends to the surviving family members of any person who died. They can pursue accountability through California Code of Civil Procedure § 377.60.
We at Samer Habbas & Associates PC extend our deepest sympathies to the family of the woman killed in this collision. It is our sincere hope that the dozens of other victims will be able to make a full recovery. It is deeply concerning that such a large and powerful commercial vehicle entered into opposing traffic on such a busy freeway. Many questions still need to be answered. What is the safety record of the company that owned the truck? Was the truck driver involved properly licensed?
