Circumstances Leading Up to Fatal Motorcycle Accident on the Golden State (5) Freeway Remain Under Investigation

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA (September 11, 2025) – A 35-year-old motorcyclist has tragically died in a car accident with a box truck on the 5 Freeway, north of the Pomona 60 Freeway.

Los Angeles County officials are saying that the accident took place around 9:45 AM on Saturday. For undetermined reasons, a box truck was involved in a collision with a 35-year-old motorcyclist.

Paramedics and the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner were called to the scene of the accident. Sadly, the victim died due to the severe nature of his injuries.

Authorities closed four southbound lanes of the freeway for around 90 minutes. A full investigation into the downtown Los Angeles truck accident remains ongoing.

Liability for Los Angeles County Box Truck Accidents

Due to their large size and weight, trucks pose a number of unique dangers to other drivers on the roadway. A fully loaded truck can weigh 80,000 lbs. Truck drivers must operate their vehicles at a safe speed at all times. According to California Vehicle Code 22350, “No person shall drive a vehicle upon a highway at a speed greater than is reasonable or prudent having due regard for weather, visibility, the traffic on, and the surface and width of, the highway, and in no event at a speed which endangers the safety of persons or property.” There are some unique safety requirements imposed on operators of commercial trucks.

  • Licensing: Drivers of commercial trucks must have a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) that is appropriate for the type of vehicle they are operating.
  • Medical Examination: Truck drivers must pass a medical evaluation and carry a DOT medical card with them at all times.
  • Hours of Service: Truck drivers are not allowed to drive more than 14 consecutive hours in one shift. They must also take 30-minute rest breaks after driving for 8 hours.
  • Drug and Alcohol Testing: Truck drivers are required to undergo pre-employment drug testing. They are also held to a higher standard with respect to what is considered intoxicated. Truck drivers are not allowed to operate with a blood alcohol concentration of 0.04% or higher.

If a truck driver acts negligently and causes an accident, their employer could potentially be held at fault. In general, employers are vicariously liable for the wrongful actions of their employees–insofar as those employees were working within the course and scope of their job duties. However, many truck companies attempt to limit their legal exposure to accidents by hiring their drivers as “independent contractors.”

Steps to Take After a Los Angeles County Truck Accident

Trucks are involved in many fatal collisions every year. According to the IIHS, “A total of 4,354 people died in large truck crashes in 2023. Sixteen percent of these deaths were truck occupants, 65% were occupants of cars and other passenger vehicles, and 17% were pedestrians, bicyclists or motorcyclists.” It is important that certain actions are taken after any truck accident.

  • Police Report: The police should be called to the scene so that they can begin an immediate investigation.
  • Photos: Numerous photos of the accident site should be taken. They can help detail how an accident took place.
  • Surveillance Footage: Though surveillance footage is not available for all accidents, it can be enormously valuable in demonstrating what parties may be liable.
  • Event Data Recorder: If the truck involved in a crash had an event data recorder (EDR), this should be recovered and analyzed. It can help reveal how fast a truck was going before a crash.

Fatal truck accidents can be absolutely devastating for the victim’s surviving family members. To make matters worse, the drivers involved in these incidents and their employers will virtually never accept responsibility for what took place. This is why it is so important that these incidents are properly investigated by an outside party. Surviving family members are able to seek some measure of justice through a wrongful death claim.
