Hazing Triggers “Audit” in Pomona

Published by
Samer Habbas, Esq

Authorities at the Cal Poly University in Pomona, CA have suspended privileges for 31 fraternities after a hazing incident, according to local news reports. A member of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity came forward in October 2010, claiming that members of the fraternity “branded” him with a hot object.

Although the witness in this case was already a member of the fraternity in December 2009 when this event allegedly occurred, local officials are taking no chances, subjecting all fraternities to a “hazing audit” before they can resume full activities on campus. Hazing has been a big issue all around the country for many years, and investigators are looking into what actually happens, sometimes in significant secrecy, to those who expect to be initiated into college fraternities and sororities.

Hazing injuries are a particular kind of personal injury involving elements of peer pressure and other social factors that play a large role in the conduct of the victim and the actions of any negligent parties. Many times, victims can identify those who instigated hazing activities and provide details regarding how harmful hazing incidents happened. Police can investigate any occurrences of hazing that take place on campus, but when victims need to secure compensation for their personal injuries, they often seek legal representation. An attorney can help do the necessary research and fact-finding in order to obtain compensation for medical bills and all other costs resulting from injuries.
