20 Intersections Across Los Angeles County Are Involved in a Disproportionate Number of Fatal and Serious Injury Collisions
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA (October 17, 2025) – Numerous intersections across Los Angeles are increasingly becoming the sites of serious injury and fatal collisions, according to reporting by Crosstown.
One intersection has been particularly deadly over the last four years. The intersection of South Figueroa and Slauson Avenue has been the site of 17 felony hit-and-run crashes.
There were also five serious injury accidents at that location. In all, there have been 66 car accidents at the intersection. But it’s not just this intersection. Roughly 300 people die every year in car accidents across Los Angeles.
Many of the intersections across Los Angeles have some of the same problems. One major issue is their relative proximity to freeway off-ramps.
Drivers exiting the freeway are often traveling at high speeds and fail to slow down to avoid pedestrians. What follows is a list of the 20 most dangerous intersections across LA.
Efforts have been made over the years to curb the bloodshed. In particular, former LA Mayor Eric Garcetti launched “Vision Zero” to reduce traffic deaths.
But these efforts have proved to be largely unfruitful.
Every driver in Los Angeles has a legal obligation to use caution to avoid causing accidents. They must be particularly cautious when any pedestrian is nearby. Pursuant to California Vehicle Code 21954, pedestrians must yield the right-of-way to all vehicles upon a roadway that are close enough so as to constitute an immediate hazard. However, this does not relieve a driver’s responsibility to exercise due care to avoid colliding with a pedestrian, even if they’re outside of a marked crosswalk. Many different factors could contribute to a pedestrian collision.
When a driver fails to slow down to avoid colliding with any pedestrian in the roadway, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. It is also possible that a business could be legally responsible for any pedestrian accident. As a general principle, employers can be vicariously liable for the wrongful action of their workers who are operating within the course and scope of their job duties. This could include instances where a driver was transporting goods or passengers for a fee.
Los Angeles and other cities could be legally responsible for car accidents if they were the result of a dangerous condition on public property. According to California Government Code § 835, “Except as provided by statute, a public entity is liable for injury caused by a dangerous condition of its property if the plaintiff establishes that the property was in a dangerous condition at the time of the injury.” Several elements will need to be demonstrated in such a case.
When there is a history of accidents at a particular intersection, this could be due to some underlying defect. For example, foliage may have grown over a stop sign or otherwise obstructed a driver’s field of vision at an intersection. A history of collisions may also serve as constructive notice of the dangerous condition in the first place. Any person that is injured in a car accident in Los Angeles may be able to pursue some measure of justice and accountability through a personal injury claim.
We at Samer Habbas & Associates PC extend our best wishes to all of the people who have been injured in car accidents across Los Angeles over the years. Many of these collisions are highly preventable. City leaders should do the right thing and take concrete action to address known safety deficiencies. A good place to focus would be these 20 intersections with the highest total number of injury collisions.
