VALENCIA, CALIFORNIA (September 23, 2026) – Three new lawsuits have been filed against Six Flags Magic Mountain after people who rode the X2 roller coaster reportedly suffered brain injuries.
These are among dozens of similar lawsuits that have been pursued after more and more victims have come forward. The lawsuits allege that the X2 roller coaster had design defects that date back to 2002.
Court documents revealed that one woman visited Six Flags Magic Mountain with her family for her daughter’s 16th birthday. They ended up riding the X2 roller coaster.
Following the conclusion of the ride, that woman reportedly felt confused and disoriented. She was hospitalized and reported waking up in a hospital two weeks later after she underwent brain surgery.
She told reporters that she sustained a traumatic brain injury that left her in a coma and required her to spend almost a month in the hospital. These lawsuits come after Six Flags Magic Mountain settled a wrongful death lawsuit filed on behalf of a man who died after riding the X2 roller coaster in 2022.
Property owners in California have a legal obligation to maintain their premises in a reasonably safe condition. Pursuant to California Civil Code § 1714, “Everyone is responsible, not only for the result of his or her willful acts, but also for an injury occasioned to another by his or her want of ordinary care or skill in the management of his or her property or person, except so far as the latter has, willfully or by want of ordinary care, brought the injury upon himself or herself.” Amusement park owners should take several steps to prevent people from being injured by their rides.
When an amusement park has a roller coaster or other ride that creates a foreseeable risk of injury to guests, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. Consider, for example, Gomez v. Superior Court, 35 Cal. 4th 1125 (Cal. 2005). A 23-year-old woman sustained a severe brain injury after riding Disneyland’s popular Indiana Jones attraction. Sadly, she later died at the hospital. Attorneys for the plaintiff argued that Disney negligently exposed riders to violent shaking and swinging that created a foreseeable risk of brain injury.
Accidents and injuries involving amusement rides are unfortunately much more common than many people realize. In fact, more than 100 people have come forward to file lawsuits alleging they were injured on the X2 roller coaster at Six Flags Magic Mountain. According to one report from the Consumer Product Safety Commission, there were an estimated 43,826 emergency department-treated injuries associated with amusement park rides in the year 2024 alone. It is vital that the evidence is properly preserved and collected after any accident involving an amusement park ride.
Amusement park owners will often claim that they are shielded from liability for accidents involving their rides under the assumption of risk doctrine. However, ordinary people do not foresee the possibility that they could be seriously injured or killed while seeking a thrilling experience at an amusement park. This is probably the furthest thing from most people’s minds. The victims of these accidents are protected by a number of laws. They are able to seek some measure of accountability through a civil action.
