Although the median age of the vaping-related death is 52, most of the individuals who have suffered damage to their lungs have been teenagers and those in their early 20s. The outbreak, which started in March and peaked in August and September, is still on the rise. The majority of the cases, 43 percent to be exact, were people hospitalized since November 17, according to the CDC.
Although no definite culprit has been identified for these injuries and deaths, CDC officials have narrowed it to a chemical compound called vitamin E acetate. This compound, which is a thickening agent added to illicit THC vaping liquids, has been commonly found in the lungs of victims who have fallen ill from these products. These hazardous chemicals have found to be laced in non-certified vaping products, which are mostly sold at unlicensed dispensaries and other unauthorized establishments.
If you are an avid electronic cigarette user, be extremely cautious about the products you purchase to vape. For those who continue to use these products, be sure to monitor your symptoms. Seek medical attention immediately if you have any health concerns. You can contact your local health care provider or call your local poison control center at 1-800-222-1222.
