Car Accident With CHP Squad Vehicle Results in Four Fatalities on the 605 Freeway in Norwalk

NORWALK, CALIFORNIA (July 20, 2025) – Four people have died and two others were injured in a Norwalk car accident involving a California Highway Patrol vehicle on the 605 freeway.

Los Angeles County officials are saying that the incident began around 1:00 AM on Sunday. A Nissan was heading southbound on the 605 freeway when it clipped a CHP vehicle for undetermined reasons.

That Nissan became disabled on the freeway. Shortly after that first collision, a Kia struck the disabled Nissan.

The force of the impact caused the Nissan to burst into flames. It remains unclear how much time there was between the two collisions.

Paramedics were called to the scene in order to help all of the victims. Sadly, four people inside of the Nissan died due to the severe nature of their injuries.

Two other people were also injured in the collision. A full investigation into the Norwalk car accident remains ongoing.

Liability for Los Angeles County Car Accidents

Car accidents remain one of the leading causes of preventable injury and death across Los Angeles County and California. According to SAFE, “There were 336 traffic fatalities in 2023, breaking the 300 mark for the second year in a row, and the highest number of fatalities in over 20 years, which is how far our records reach.” There are many measures that cities can take to help prevent motor vehicle collisions.

  • Road Design: Cities can install traffic calming measures, such as speed bumps and roundabouts, to limit speeding.
  • Enforcement: Police officers should heavily enforce traffic violations that are likely to contribute to accidents.
  • Study: Cities should study which roadways and intersections are the most problematic. Most car accidents in a city tend to take place on a relatively small number of roads and intersections.

All drivers have a legal obligation to exercise care to avoid causing accidents. This necessitates that all drivers maintain a safe distance with the vehicles ahead of them. Pursuant to California Vehicle Code 21703, the driver of a motor vehicle shall not follow another vehicle more closely than would be safe, having due regard to the traffic upon a roadway. There is simply no excuse for a driver to rear-end another vehicle in their own lane of traffic, even if they are stopped in the middle of the roadway.

Depending on the facts of any case, there could be numerous sources of liability for a collision. This includes the company that manufactured a vehicle. If a vehicle bursts into flames after being struck from behind, this may be due to a design defect. Consider, for example, Anderson v. General Motors. A family was critically injured after a fire consumed their Chevrolet Malibu that was rear-ended by a drunk driver. That fire was the result of a defectively designed fuel system within the vehicle. It is important that certain measures be taken after any car accident.

  • Medical records related to injuries should be collected.
  • The vehicles involved in a crash may need to be preserved.
  • Surveillance footage of the collision should be sought.
  • An experienced car accident attorney should be contacted.

Car accidents are often highly preventable. This is particularly true when drivers are rear-ended. It can be hard for victims and their family members to know what to do after any collision. But it is crucial that they understand that they do have legal rights. In particular, the family of any person killed due to the negligence of another driver in California is able to seek some measure of justice through a wrongful death claim.
