What to Do if Injured in a Car Accident

Published by
Samer Habbas, Esq

A young girl was severely injured when her bicycle was struck by an out-of-state motorist. In a recent story printed by the Contra Costa Times, California Highway Patrol responding to an injury accident near Magalia found a six-year-old girl with head injuries and a broken leg. Apparently, the girl lost control of her bicycle on a steep hill and veered into the path of an oncoming vehicle.

While no one expects a young child to know what to do in case of an injury car accident, all responsible motorists should have at least a basic understanding of what to do if they or another party are injured in an accident.

Call emergency personnel immediately if you are suffering any of the following symptoms:

  • Heavy bleeding
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Fatigue
  • Dizziness
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Blurred vision

These symptoms are often associated with severe injuries. Additionally, if you can see any visible sign of a major injury-such as torn flesh, exposed bone, obvious bone breaks or other injury-please call emergency medical personnel immediately.

If you have a camera phone, take pictures or video of your injuries. Documenting the extent of your injuries can prove to be highly valuable if you need to go to court to recover your medical expenses.

Once your condition has stabilized, contact your insurance company.

If you are just shaken up in a car accident, you should strongly consider contacting a doctor or other medical professional for a thorough physical checkup as soon as possible after an injury car accident. Occasionally, serious medical conditions may not present any symptoms for several hours or days after the injury accident.

If you or a loved one has been injured in an auto accident, please contact the Law Offices of Samer Habbas and discuss your situation with an experienced California accident lawyer.
