Manslaughter Charges in California Motorcycle Accident that Kills Girl, 9

As mourners paid their respects at a memorial service for a 9-year-old girl who was killed in a California motorcycle accident, the man who allegedly caused the girl’s death made a crude gesture in superior court while he faced charges of second-degree murder, gross vehicular manslaughter, and mayhem. The avvo.com article about the California motorcycle accident claims that Edward Schaefer, 43, who has six prior DUI convictions, was allegedly drunk when the motorcycle he was riding struck the girl and her father.

The article states that Melody Osheroff and her 41-year-old father-Aaron Osheroff-were crossing San Marin Drive at San Carlos Way when they were struck by Schaefer’s motorcycle. The girl died from injuries suffered in the motorcycle accident and her father remains in critical condition after his injuries required the amputation of his leg.

While his defense attorney was arguing for the removal of cameras during his trial, Schaefer reportedly raised the middle finger of one hand to the television cameras in the courtroom. Schaefer entered a not-guilty plea to the charges.

While any loss of life is tragic, it is especially tragic when a child is killed in an accident where an adult was operating their vehicle in a negligent manner. Driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol can be considered negligence and a skilled California personal injury attorney may be able to help accident victims receive compensation to help with medical expenses, burial expenses and other costs.

Through their knowledge of the law and experience, a California personal injury lawyer can hold those responsible for the accident accountable for their actions and prevent them from killing or injuring anyone else.
