Train Accidents on the Rise

On September 12, 2008, a Metrolink commuter train collided head-on with a Union Pacific freight locomotive in Chatsworth, CA, resulting in the deaths of 25 people and injuries to 135 more. This California train accident received significant national and international attention for the scope of the accident, the number of people whose lives were affected and what caused the accident to occur. On June 30, a freight train derailed in Italy and crashed into a small town killing 12 people and injuring at least 50 more.
