According to many of the plaintiffs in this legal drama, their warnings went unheeded by university officials as far back as Dr. Tyndall’s first year of employment with USC, which was 1989. Based on statements from numerous women, Dr. Tyndall allegedly acted inappropriately in many ways. For example, some women stated he made them lie naked on a table with no sheet covering them, while others stated he made sexual comments regarding their breasts and vaginas. Along with these behaviors, it is also alleged that Dr. Tyndall on multiple occasions watched the women undress, took pictures of their genitals, and even diagnosed some women with serious diseases, all of which were unfounded.
Due to the seriousness and scope of the allegations, Dr. Tyndall is currently under investigation by the Los Angeles Police Department for possible sexual assault. And as more women come forward with their stories, detectives expect more allegations to be made, which could result in the investigation being a prolonged process.
Along with the Michigan State University case, there have been other sexual assault lawsuits that are similar to that of USC. One of these involved Johns Hopkins Hospital, where a gynecologist was found guilty of secretly taking pictures and videos of his patients. In the class-action settlement, the hospital agreed to pay $190 million to the victims, which led to victims receiving nearly $30,000 in compensation. However, this was considered a very small lawsuit, and lawyers representing USC victims believe the settlement amount may be far greater than $190 million, leading to each plaintiff likely receiving compensation into the millions of dollars.
In these types of cases, one of the biggest traumas to victims involves the violation of trust between patient and doctor. By performing these various acts under the guise of giving necessary medical care, Dr. Tyndall instead appears to have done so purely for his own sexual gratification. Because of this, numerous victims are now receiving counseling, or expect to do so in the years to come.
