Investigation Underway Following Deadly Hesperia Bicycle Collision Involving Tesla Near Main Street and Pyrite Avenue

HESPERIA, CALIFORNIA (August 7, 2025) -A 58-year-old bicyclist has tragically died in a Hesperia car accident involving a Tesla along Main Street, just west of Pyrite Avenue.

San Bernardino County officials are saying that the accident took place around 10:00 p.m. on July 28. A bicyclist was heading down the roadway when they were struck by a Tesla.

Photos of the accident site show the Tesla Model 3 with major damage to the right side of the vehicle, including the windshield. Paramedics were called to the scene to help the victim.

Despite life-saving measures, the bicyclist died due to the severe nature of their injuries. The driver of the Tesla remained at the scene and cooperated with authorities.

Authorities are asking anyone that may have witnessed the crash to reach out to them.

Liability for Hesperia Car Accidents

Drivers in California must operate their vehicle with the proper precautions necessary to avoid hitting any pedestrian or cyclist on the roadway. According to California Civil Code 21200, bicyclists have the same rights and responsibilities as other drivers. Drivers must treat them as lawful road users. Pursuant to California Civil Code 21703, drivers must not follow other road users more closely than would be reasonable and prudent for traffic conditions. There are several ways that a driver’s negligence may have contributed to a bicycle accident.

  • Speed: A driver may have been traveling too fast for the prevailing conditions.
  • Distance: A driver may have failed to stay at least 3 feet away from a bicyclist on the roadway.
  • Distractions: A driver may have been distracted by their phone or some other object.
  • Blind Spots: A driver may have failed to check their blind spots before changing lanes or turning at an intersection.

When a driver fails to operate their vehicle in a safe manner to avoid collisions, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. Gathering sufficient evidence is a crucial component of demonstrating that one driver was at fault for a crash. An important piece of evidence is the police report created immediately after the incident. However, these reports are not always accurate and only reveal an officer’s initial impressions of what took place.

How Tesla Vehicles May Have Contributed to an Accident

In addition to human error, accidents with Tesla cars also raise the possibility that Tesla could potentially be liable for a collision. Unlike most other cars on the roadway, Tesla vehicles are equipped with advanced technological systems that allow the car to drive autonomously and semi-autonomously in different circumstances. There are several failure points with a Tesla vehicle that could potentially cause a collision.

  • Lidar: The lidar sensors on a Tesla may have failed to properly detect a bicyclist in the roadway when the vehicle was in Autopilot.
  • Cameras: The cameras on a Tesla may have failed to judge the distance between vehicles ahead of it. In particular, there have been several situations where a Tesla allegedly in Autopilot has crashed into an emergency vehicle.
  • AI Systems: Tesla vehicles rely on powerful computers and algorithms. If these systems malfunction or fail to synthesize their inputs, this could cause a collision.

When a defect with any part of a Tesla’s self-driving systems contributes to an accident, this could form the basis of a product liability claim. These types of cases can be extremely difficult to pursue, given how complex the software and hardware are. This is why it is so valuable to have any car accident involving a Tesla properly evaluated by skilled investigators who thoroughly understand these systems.
