BMW Driver Arrested on Suspicion of DUI After Deadly San Leandro Hit-and-Run Collision on Interstate Highway 880

SAN LEANDRO, CALIFORNIA (May 13, 2026) – A teenage girl has tragically died after being ejected from a BMW and hit by a box truck on Interstate Highway 88 in San Leandro.
California Highway Patrol are saying that the accident took place on Sunday morning. A BMW 535i was traveling in the northbound lanes of the interstate when it was involved in a collision with a Honda Accord.
The force of the impact caused the BMW to eject a teenage girl. That girl landed on the interstate before being hit by a box truck that also crashed into the wreckage.
Paramedics were called to the scene of the crash to help all of the victims. Sadly, the teenage girl was pronounced dead at the accident site.
The driver of the BMW allegedly fled the scene of the crash before being arrested. That driver is also suspected of being intoxicated prior to the collision.
Liability for San Leandro Truck Accidents
Every driver in California has a legal obligation to operate their vehicle at a safe speed and maintain a safe follow distance with all other traffic ahead of them. According to California Vehicle Code 21703, “The driver of a motor vehicle shall not follow another vehicle more closely than is reasonable and prudent, having due regard for the speed of such vehicle and the traffic upon, and the condition of, the roadway.” There are many other ways that a driver may have acted negligently prior to a collision.
- A driver may have been traveling at an unsafe speed given the prevailing road conditions.
- A driver may have made an unsafe lane change into the path of another vehicle.
- A driver may have failed to maintain their vehicle prior to a mechanical failure.
If a driver fails to slow down to avoid hitting another vehicle, this could serve as evidence of negligence. Drivers that caused motor vehicle collisions when intoxicated could also face criminal liability for their actions. It is illegal to operate a motor vehicle while under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Depending on the specific facts of any case, there could be several sources of liability for a collision. The driver of a truck could face liability if they hit a pedestrian on the roadway.
Steps to Take After San Leandro Truck Accidents
Car accidents remain one of the leading causes of preventable injury and death across California and the United States. According to Cal Matters, “Over the past decade, nearly 40,000 people have died and more than 2 million have been injured on California roads.” Certain actions should be taken after any San Leandro box truck accident.
- The police should be called to the accident site as early as possible so that they can begin investigating.
- All of the medical records related to the accident should be preserved.
- Fragments of any vehicle that fled the scene should be sought.
- The family of any person who died in the collision should seek an independent review by a team experienced in tort claims.
Losing a loved one in a car accident is often one of the most difficult and traumatic things that most people will ever go through in their lives. To make matters worse, negligent drivers and their insurance providers will almost never accept responsibility for any collision. This is why it is so important that these incidents be investigated by an outside party. The family of any person who died due to the negligence of another driver may have legal recourse through a civil claim.
