Mobile Apps that Promote Safe Driving

Distracted driving accounts for the majority of motor vehicle crashes. According to the US Department of Transportation, the use of cell phones while driving plays a role in 1.6 million motor vehicle collisions each year, causing 500,000 injuries and 6,000 deaths. Technology has grown to become both a problem and solution in the automotive industry.

A survey uncovered that nearly 90 percent of drivers use their smartphone while behind the wheel. Studies show for every hour a driver is on the road, they spend 3.5 minutes looking at their phone—if a driver takes their eyes off the road for at least two seconds, their chance of an accident increases by over 20 times.

Let’s say you look down at your phone for a total of five seconds while driving at 55mph. At that speed and time, that equals to driving the length of a football field with your eyes closed. Is responding to that text really worth it? Can it wait?

As much as it has been a problem, creators in the tech industry have worked to produce products and phone applications that help reduce distracted driving.

Mobile Apps that Promote Safe Driving

Although texting while driving is banned in 46 states, many people continue to do so, despite knowing the dangers. Below are some mobile apps (for IOS and Android phones) that block/limit cell phone usage while driving or help encourage safe driving habits.

  1. Lifesaver

The app runs silently in the background and automatically presents a block (Android) and deterring ‘Keep your eyes on the road’ notification (iPhone) on the driver’s smartphone while the car is in motion. The app is transparent to the driver when not driving and uses the latest techniques to minimize battery consumption. PLEASE initiate your navigation before you drive!

  2. Drivemode

Drivemode simplifies how you use your phone while driving. With a streamlined interface to safely access your favorite applications, Drivemode’s voice-enabled commands and large buttons let you to focus on driving. Use voice-control, a broad swipe, or a single tap and move seamlessly between applications. (Available on IOS and Android.)

  3. DriveSmart

DriveSmart allows you to analyze how you drive comfortably and safely to improve the wheel and show that you are a good driver. At the end of the trip you will see all the details: distance and duration of the trip, incidents based on speed, acceleration, braking, turns and reaction to traffic signals. You will also receive directions and personalized advice to improve your driving.
