Multiple People Killed After San Diego Plane Crash in Military Neighborhood

Cessna C550 Struck Multiple Homes and Vehicles, Setting Several on Fire
SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA (May 22, 2025) – Multiple people have tragically died after a small plane crashed into several homes and vehicles in a quiet military neighborhood in San Diego.
San Diego County officials are saying that the Cessna C550 crashed into the Murphy Canyon neighborhood on Salmon Street around 4 AM on Thursday. The force of the impact caused jet fuel to be spilled onto several vehicles and homes, which set them on fire in the process.
A temporary evacuation site has been set up at Miller Elementary School along Shields Street. Multiple fatalities have been reported thus far.
But it remains unclear how many of the victims were on the plane compared to bystanders. Early reports suggest that the plane took off from Teterboro Airport in New Jersey.
A full investigation into the cause of the accident remains ongoing at this time. Heavy fog was reported in the area prior to the collision.
Liability for San Diego Plane Crashes
When compared to general aviation, private aviation remains quite dangerous. There are many years where the number of fatal accidents in general aviation is measured in single digits. This contrasts sharply with accidents involving smaller commuter planes. According to the National Safety Council, “The number of civil aviation deaths decreased from 358 in 2022 to 327 in 2023. All but 4 of the 327 deaths in 2023 were onboard fatalities. None of these deaths involved a commercial scheduled airline.” Several factors could contribute to a plane crash.
- Weather Conditions: Poor visibility is one of the leading causes of aviation accidents. When pilots aren’t able to see the ground beneath them, this could easily lead to a Controlled Flight Into Terrain (CFIT).
- Pilot Error: The vast majority of plane crashes involve some amount of pilot error. This can come in many different forms, including failure to follow instrument flight rules (IFR) procedures.
- Fuel Exhaustion: Planes require fuel to operate in much the same way as cars. If an aircraft exhausts fuel mid-use, this could lead to a catastrophic accident.
- Mechanical Failure: Any number of potential failures with an aircraft’s key components could potentially cause a collision. If, for example, one engine on a plane loses power, it can be difficult for a pilot to maintain control.
Depending on the facts of any case, there could be numerous sources of liability for a plane crash. If the pilot operating the plane was transporting passengers for commercial purposes, their employer could potentially be held at fault. As a general principle, employers are vicariously liable for the wrongful conduct of their employees–insofar as those employees were working within the course and scope of their job duties. It is therefore critical to determine whether any plane was being operated for commercial purposes prior to a collision.
It is also possible that the federal government could bear some liability for any plane crash. The government is responsible for operating air traffic control towers. These operators have a legal duty to provide pilots with accurate information so that they can avoid terrain and other aircraft. In the event that a pilot is operating at an altitude near an airport, ATC must issue warnings such as ‘Low altitude alert—climb immediately.’ If ATC operators deviated from standard safety protocols, this may be construed as negligence.
In many cases, the cause of a plane crash could extend beyond a pilot. Airplanes are complex pieces of machinery that must be routinely inspected and well-maintained. But in some circumstances, defects with an aircraft could lead to a catastrophic accident. The Cessna C550 is known to have a number of problems that have contributed to crashes in the past. This includes fuel system problems and electrical system failures. It is important that certain steps are taken after any plane crash.
- A thorough investigation should be conducted by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB).
- The conditions leading up to the plane crash should be understood.
- Surveillance footage that may have captured the crash should be reviewed.
- All medical records related to injuries should be preserved.
- An experienced aviation accident attorney should be contacted.
Aviation accidents are often highly preventable. They tend to occur when safety protocols are simply not being followed. Victims often suffer catastrophic injuries and may need to take extended periods of time away from work. To make matters worse, transportation companies will often do everything in their power to deny responsibility if one of their pilots is involved in a collision. This is why it is so critical that every aviation disaster is properly investigated by an outside party. Any person injured in an aviation accident may be able to seek some measure of accountability through an injury claim.
