California Highway Patrol Investigating Deadly Los Angeles County Truck Accident Involving Pedestrian on the 101 Freeway

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA(February 27, 2026) – A pedestrian has tragically died in a Los Angeles car accident involving a semi-truck on the 101 Freeway, west of Lost Hills Road.
The California Highway Patrol are saying that the collision took place around 6:00 AM on Monday. A semi-truck was traveling down the eastbound lanes of the freeway when it was involved in a collision with a pedestrian.
The force of the impact knocked the pedestrian to the ground, leaving them with major injuries. Paramedics were called to the scene of the collision to help the injured victim.
Sadly, that person was beyond medical aid and pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the truck remained at the scene and cooperated with police.
Authorities closed all eastbound lanes of the freeway for approximately 45 minutes as they continued their investigation.
Liability for Los Angeles Truck Accidents
Operating a commercial truck is substantially more difficult than driving a passenger vehicle. Truck drivers must receive ample training and are expected to drive with an abundance of caution. Pursuant to California Vehicle Code 21950, the driver of any vehicle shall exercise due care to avoid colliding with any pedestrian in the roadway. Even if a pedestrian is in the middle of a road, this does not relieve a driver of their duty of care to slow down and take evasive action. Multiple factors could contribute to any truck accident.
- Inclement Weather: Truck accidents are much more likely to happen during periods of inclement weather.
- Reduced Visibility: Truck accidents are more likely in the early morning and late evening when visibility is reduced.
- Speed: Truck accidents are more likely if truck drivers are not traveling at a speed that would be safe given the prevailing conditions.
- Fatigue: Truck accidents are more likely if truck drivers are fatigued.
Pedestrians have a naturally small profile and are more likely to be overlooked. If a truck driver fails to slow down to avoid colliding with a pedestrian in the roadway, this could be construed as negligence. Liability for any truck accident could extend beyond any specific driver deemed to be at fault. For example, the company responsible for maintaining a truck could be liable for a collision if an accident was caused by a vehicle system failure.
Common Injuries Associated With Truck Accidents
Commercial trucks can weigh 80,000 pounds and can be extremely dangerous even at lower speeds. According to the National Safety Council, “A total of 5,472 people died in large-truck crashes in 2023. The number of deaths decreased 8% from 2022 but is up 40% in the last 10 years. The majority of deaths in large-truck crashes are occupants of other vehicles (70%), followed by truck occupants (18%), and non-occupants, primarily pedestrians and bicyclists (12%).” Victims of pedestrian accidents routinely suffer very serious injuries.
- Broken Bones: Pedestrians tend to suffer broken bones in their legs and wrists.
- Head Injuries: Being knocked to the ground can leave pedestrians with very serious head injuries.
- Spinal Cord Injuries: Damage to the spinal cord is another common occurrence in pedestrian collisions.
- Organ Damage: Not all of the injuries in a pedestrian collision will be outwardly obvious. Many victims suffer internal bleeding and damage to their organs.
Of course, many pedestrians do not survive their injuries. Unfortunately, truck companies will almost never accept responsibility if they hit a pedestrian. They are more likely to blame the victim or other third parties. This is why it is so important that these incidents are investigated by an outside party. It is important for the victims of these accidents and their families to understand that they do have legal rights. They are able to seek some measure of justice and accountability through a civil claim.
