School Bus Driver Crashed Into Multiple Parked Vehicles In South Los Angeles
SOUTH LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA (March 17, 2023) – At least one person was injured in a South Los Angeles school bus accident on the 1700 block of West 54th Street.
Los Angeles County police officials are saying that the collision took place around 7:30 a.m. on Friday. A school bus veered off of the road and hit several parked vehicles before hitting a fence and coming to rest in a yard.
Paramedics were called to the scene in order to help the victims. At least one person is confirmed to have been taken to the hospital.
The school bus driver was apparently trying to avoid a vehicle prior to the crash. A full investigation remains ongoing at this time.
Liability For South Los Angeles School Bus Accidents
School buses are typically very safe forms of transportation for children. According to the National Transportation Safety Board, “Although school buses are extremely safe, we have investigated school bus crashes in which children were injured and, in some cases, died, and identified areas in which safety improvements are needed.” Pedestrians and cyclists are particularly vulnerable in school bus accidents. There are a number of steps that school districts should take in order to help prevent school bus accidents.
- School bus drivers should be well-trained in how their vehicle operates.
- School districts should thoroughly vet any potential bus driver.
- School districts should periodically inspect and maintain all of the school buses in their fleet.
School buses are considered common carriers and are held to a high standard in terms of safety. Common carriers must use the highest care and the vigilance of a very cautious person in order to keep their passengers safe. Pursuant to California Vehicle Code 21703, the driver of a vehicle shall not follow another vehicle more closely than would be safe or reasonable given the prevailing conditions of the road. If a bus driver fails to maintain a safe distance from another vehicle before a collision, this could form the basis of a negligence claim.
The school district that a school bus belonged to could also be held at fault for a collision. In general, employers are vicariously liable for the wrongful actions of their employees – insofar as those employees were working within the course and scope of their job duties. For example, a bus driver may have been transporting children when they crashed. There are many steps that should be taken after any school bus accident.
- Any person that is injured should seek medical attention.
- All medical records related to the accident should be preserved.
- Eyewitnesses should ideally be interviewed shortly after the crash.
- Bus accident victims should seek the guidance of an experienced personal injury attorney.
Many accident victims may not realize the full extent of their injuries for several weeks or even months after a collision. Any person that is injured in a school bus accident may be able to seek compensation through a personal injury claim. Damages in a civil claim can help cover lost wages, medical bills, and pain and suffering. A school bus accident attorney can examine all of the unique facts of your case and let you know what your legal options are.
