Six Flags Magic Mountain’s X2 Roller Coaster Linked to Two Deaths, Many Serious Injuries

VALENCIA, CALIFORNIA (August 27, 2026) – At least two people have died and over a dozen were seriously injured after riding Six Flags Magic Mountain’s X2 roller coaster.

Two of the victims reportedly needed emergency brain surgery within a few days of each other after riding the roller coaster in July. These revelations are coming forth after CNN reviewed numerous medical records and court filings.

One of the victims was visiting the park to celebrate her 16-year-old daughter’s birthday. She repeatedly struck her head against the headrest, which caused a tremendous brain swelling.

Surgeons actually had to remove part of her skull to relieve some of the swelling. Sadly, she was still on a ventilator and in a coma as of August 2026.

For its part, Six Flags has said that the ride is currently closed as they investigate.

Liability for Roller Coaster Injuries at Six Flags Magic Mountain

Theme park operators have a legal obligation to maintain their premises in a reasonably safe condition to prevent foreseeable sources of harm. Pursuant to California Civil Code 1714, “Everyone is responsible, not only for the result of his or her willful acts, but also for an injury occasioned to another by his or her want of ordinary care or skill in the management of his or her property or person, except so far as the latter has, willfully or by want of ordinary care, brought the injury upon himself or herself.” Moreover, California Civil Code 2100 requires that amusement park operators use the utmost care and diligence to ensure the safety of their guests. Investigators take into consideration numerous factors when determining liability for any accident involving a roller coaster.

  • Design and Testing: The overall design of the roller coaster and the history of any safety test performed on the roller coaster are critical in determining whether or not safety regulations were met. Any roller coaster that has a propensity to violently shake a user’s head likely has serious design issues.
  • Maintenance: Even if a roller coaster was designed and tested to be safe, routine inspections and maintenance are essential to ensure continued safety.
  • Training: Roller coasters can only be safe if park employees strictly follow all safety guidelines. Riders must be adequately secured and ineligible riders must be excluded.
  • Operating Limits: The manner in which any roller coaster is operated could potentially create safety issues. When a roller coaster is not operated according to documented safety specifications, this could be viewed as negligence.

If an amusement park operator has actual or constructive notice that one of their roller coasters poses an unreasonable safety risk to park guests, they must take action. Failing to take action could form the basis of a personal injury claim. Consider, for example, Gomez v. Superior Court, 35 Cal.4th 1125 (California Supreme Court 2005). A woman sustained a serious brain injury and later died after riding Disneyland’s Indiana Jones ride. Attorneys for the plaintiff argued that Disneyland was negligent for operating the ride in an excessively violent, turbulent manner that was the proximate cause of her injuries.

What to Do After Head and Neck Injuries Involving a Roller Coaster

Roller coasters can be an incredibly thrilling and fun experience for most people. But for certain individuals, they can also result in major head, neck, and spine trauma. One peer-reviewed study in The American Journal of Emergency Medicine found that there were roughly 6,382 pediatric emergency visits involving neurological injuries stemming from roller coasters between 2004 and 2023. This averages out to an estimated 319 injuries per year or slightly below one injury per day. Several steps should be taken after any accidents involving a roller coaster.

  • Emergency Care: Victims should seek medical treatment as early as possible. Many of the symptoms associated with a neurological injury are not necessarily going to be immediately obvious. They can include neck pain, confusion, dizziness, and headache.
  • Witnesses: Any person who may have witnessed the incident should be identified and interviewed as early as possible.
  • Communication: All documentation related to the trip visit should also be preserved. This includes any tickets, confirmations, or incident paperwork related to the actual event.
  • Operational Records: All of the operational records related to the roller coaster in question should be preserved. This will include the history of maintenance, repairs, and testing for that ride.

Perhaps the most important step to take after any accident involving a roller coaster is to seek legal guidance. An attorney can help ensure that all of the previously mentioned steps are being followed. They can also subpoena necessary records to help reveal what may have contributed to any specific accident. Amusement parks are not likely to admit responsibility if someone is injured on one of their rides. This is why it is so critical that these incidents are thoroughly investigated by an outside legal party. Any person injured due to the negligence of amusement park owners may be able to seek some measure of accountability for a personal injury claim.
