At Law Offices of Samer Habbas & Associates, PC, we are committed to providing important insights and understanding of pedestrian safety and the rising concerns in traffic-related accidents. Below, we go over some key findings from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration on pedestrian accidents, highlighting important statistics and safety considerations for pedestrians and drivers alike.
Overview Of 2021 Pedestrian Fatalities And Injuries
In 2021, the U.S. witnessed a concerning rise in pedestrian fatalities in traffic crashes, reaching the highest number since 1981. A total of 7,388 pedestrians lost their lives, marking a 12.5% increase from 2020. Additionally, an estimated 60,577 pedestrians were injured, an 11% increase from the previous year. This means, on average, a pedestrian was killed every 71 minutes and injured every 9 minutes in traffic crashes in 2021.
Age And Gender Of Pedestrian Victims
Most of the pedestrians killed (70%) were males. Children aged 14 and younger accounted for 15% of the pedestrian fatalities. The age groups most affected were 60-64 and 65-69 years, each representing 23% of pedestrian traffic fatalities. Interestingly, the average age of pedestrians killed in traffic crashes was 47.
Alcohol Involvement In Pedestrian Fatalities
Alcohol played a significant role in these tragedies. In 49% of all fatal pedestrian crashes, either the driver or the pedestrian had a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of .01 or higher. Specifically, 30% of fatal pedestrian traffic crashes involved pedestrian fatalities with BACs of .08 or higher.
Characteristics Of Pedestrian Crashes
The majority of pedestrian fatalities occurred in urban areas (84%) and in non-intersection locations (75%). Notably, 77% of the fatalities happened in the dark. Most pedestrian fatalities (89%) occurred in single-vehicle crashes, and 23% were due to hit-and-run incidents.
Analysis of the time and day revealed that the highest percentage of pedestrian fatalities occurred between 9 to 11:59 p.m. Weekends, especially Friday nights to early Monday mornings, were more dangerous for pedestrians.
In crashes where a pedestrian was killed, 89% involved a single vehicle. Most pedestrians were struck by the front of the vehicles, especially in crashes involving passenger vehicles like cars and light trucks.
California, Florida, and Texas reported the highest number of pedestrian fatalities in the country.
Safety Reminders For Pedestrians And Drivers
As these statistics clearly illustrate, it’s important to use sidewalks or paths, stay alert, be visible, and avoid alcohol and drugs. Drivers should look out for pedestrians, obey speed limits, and never drive under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs.
